Year of the Bento

I am on a quest this year to take better care of myself. I would like to lose some weight, and do it in a healthy, this is the last time, way. As the universe would have it, Bento entered my life a few months ago. And also designed by the universe, my dear friend Jodie from meringue halfway around the world has come to the same conclusion.

Bento is simply the Japanese word for lunchbox. Originally made of lacquer, then tin; they are now plastic so you can even heat them up. But it is so much more than just food. One of the main points is that "the eye also eats". For me it will be portion control, healthy and being good to myself.

Traditionally bento boxes contain a 4:3:2:1 ratio of starch (rice or pasta), protein, (meat or a vegetarian substitute), vegetables and a condiment or dessert. As the year goes on, I hope to share my Bento meals as well as some of what I've learned.

For now, here are my bright shiny new bento boxes that just arrived from Japan. The next time you see them, they will be filled. Hope your New Year will be filled with good health.
If you have any Bento tips or photos to share, I'd love to see them.

Sherry, they are so cute! We're allowed to own 'cute' things at this age, aren't we? Oh who cares!
I'm looking forward to getting my bento on this year....and I promise not to fill mine with creatively cut Tim Tams.

Are you saying that Tim Tams are not one of the basic food groups?

Oh...portion control.

Sigh.

This looks like a really good way to do it...

*wonders what the heck Tim Tams are*

That is so cool. What a great idea. Looking at the lunch I just packed and the size of that little lunch box....I think my serving sizes might still be a bit on the large size!

Thanks for the convo on Tim Tams!

I'm very curious about this I must admit. I will be reading about the meals and learning more! I hope Jodie posts some of her meals also. I'm curious how they will compare from one side of the globe to the next :)

Is it shallow that I'd want one just because it's so darn cute?!

What a great idea!

Good luck to you girls on your mission!

(I'm secretly trying to lose a few pounds too, but I'm not saying it out loud yet for fear of failure.)

There are so many amazing bento groups on flickr, the meals are works of art.

Oh, Beki, you won't fail. We are all in this together.

And yes, cute is ok!

I coulda sworn I commented on this. I hope I didn't comment on Bento Boxes on someone else's blog. :)

I am so interested in the Bento Boxes. Where do you buy them? Is there like a direction book?

Adorable little bento boxes!

I have always wondered what the bento stood for and now I know.

Granted I could have looked it up but I do tend to get distracted by shiny things a little too frequently to do so.

Wonderful!
