Just wondering

I have been wondering today, which is something I do when I feel stressed over the amount of work I need to accomplish in the next few weeks, that perhaps 2011 might become the "Year of Privacy." What do you think?
.
Bob and I went to see "The Social Network" I liked it very much, but was it not lost on anyone else, that Marc Zuckerberg stole this idea from someone else? That the whole idea for facebook and the social frenzy the world has whipped upon itself was based on an idea that belonged to someone else?
.
I've been connecting, in a very real way to my customers since I started my business. My work already tells a story and the pieces are born from the dreams of weddings and anniversaries and children adopted from far off places. My jewelry makes those memories real. The connections I have with those people are real.
.
I think the blah blah blah of Facebook and Twitter are the antithesis of real connection.
.
While I'm wondering and thinking, I'm going outside to rake some leaves on this beautiful fall day. Then, I'm going to make some more jewelry and print shipping labels until the wee hours of the morning. Life is good.
.
I hope you are kissing the ones you love,
xoSherry
.
ps. do you think it's coincidence that there are 13,900 results for "assbook?" :)

Haha! Nice post and, no, I think there is no coincidence. P.S. I need to see that movie.

I haven't seen the movie, but I do find myself thinking about these things.

Blogs are a conundrum to me. Facebook too. I've had a blog for almost 5 years, and I once loved thinking my thoughts out loud. Now, it feels, well, sort of solipsistic at times. Facebook--meh. I joined to be able to play Scrabble with my daughter in CA, but I became overwhelmed and got off soon. Don't miss it even one bit. I'm not blogging much these days either. The idea of Twitter has never called my name. Sometimes I think we are so close to the sort of uber-marketing shown in the movie Minority Report that it scares me (it ain't communication if someone is trying to sell me something).

And yet I do still enjoy reading some blogs (I'm here now, eh?). I enjoy hearing real thoughts from people out there. I enjoy unexpected images and new ideas.

The yin and yang, I suppose.

Ah yes, privacy. Seems that I've been into that now for a couple of months, posting only occasionally on my blog and so very rarely checking on others. Twitter? Nope. FB... yes, but it's overwhelming, especially when you "friend" all your Etsy friends, and then you are inundated with posts that you end up just skimming through so you can get to the people who matter to you... say, your kids, your siblings, and few other sweet souls. I'm there less and less these days, except to share a photo here and there of a new creation or of our new dogs. And I'm not suffering much from lack of posting.

I like how you are connected to your customers, and I think fondly of you every time I see my daughter wearing her Athens necklace. So I'm wishing all the privacy you need and desire and the happiness and creation that goes along with it!

you are not alone in this thought ;-)

i have shut my blogs and my etsy shops. i'm sort of over it. and i love my facebook because it keeps me in touch with only the people i want to be in touch with. i sort of got over the voyeurism of blogs, etc. that is so random--you really don't know who is reading what when. at least on facebook i can limit who sees my posts and since i have family and friends all over the place it has been a fun way to reconnect, share pictures, etc.

I have not yet seen the movie, but plan to soon.

My love of blogging is quickly waning as I struggle to think of topics that I want to share with the random assortment of people who read my blog. Most of my life is simply not for public consumption.

I have a Facebook account just because I thought I needed one. (isn't that silly?). I was on there the other day reading something from my darling niece when a pop-up message from one of my friends showed up. I guess she knew I was online and contacted me. I departed quickly. If I wanted to talk to her at that moment, I would have done the old-fashioned thing and called her. That was a real eye-opener as to how intrusive FB can be. It's not for me.

Hi Sherry- first I love this-

"I've been connecting, in a very real way to my customers since I started my business. My work already tells a story and the pieces are born from the dreams of weddings and anniversaries and children adopted from far off places. My jewelry makes those memories real. The connections I have with those people are real."

Just printed this out to hang in front of me right now to remind myself how important our work is, really truly it is! How has everything gotten so mixed up and this part lost in the shuffle somehow ...

xo- off to ice my neck and shoulder and try to convince myself that I am an athlete headed into the home stretch and not an idiot about to work my 3rd shift cleaning this house for company ...

and yes, the blogging, twitter, facebook thing is maybe sucking the "real" life out of us

I'm so happy to hear from all of you, I think we are on the right track.

I think it's important as we go forward that we know we hold the power in our hands....as tired as they may be!

passes ice to Cat and calls her a cleaning service!

I often think about it too. I enjoy blogging as it gives me a place to dabble in the other things I love like decorating and cooking, etc. I've never been a tweeter and pop into Facebook occasionally just to see what my relatives are up to but even so, I find that the computer does eat up much of my precious time when i should be doing something productive or (gasp!) exercising! :)
