Why, on Wednesday

Help me out, folks. There is a trend I've been seeing I don't understand. Bloggers are writing and then closing comments to their posts. Why? I only stumbled upon it when I tried to reply to a post I read about the downfall of newspapers.
.
Oh, you can tweet it, click the dumb thumb (oh, was that snarky?) and tell others you like it. But if you want to have actual discourse, engage with other commenters with a different point of view, no, it's not going to happen.
.
I'm not going to use any adjectives to describe the writer or this trend, not yet. I want to hear from you, oh wise readers, first. Why?
.
Then you can kiss the ones you love,
xoSherry

Well ... my comments are open, so I'm not sure why from an insider position, but a blogger I read faithfully sometimes closes posts to comments when she's merely stating her thoughts on an issue or life events and doesn't want to wade through the slog that sometimes masquerades as commentary. (That's my summary and interpretation, not hers.)

I've ended up deleting a couple of posts because comments were so mean and inflamatory (one anonymous person even made overtly rude comments about my daughter) that they served no purpose other than to remind me that there are people who perfectly embody what Mark Twain once said: "'Be yourself' is the worst advice you can give to some people."

Let's just hope I'm not one of them...

I'll be interested to hear what others said. BTW--love the reading recommendations. I have new items for my list!

I haven't closed comments but have basically closed down one of my blogs because of the huge influx of spam comments so i wouldn't judge too harshly....also, there is a new trend of spreading viruses through comments so maybe they closed it because of that? a blog both you and i regularly go to was full of viruses the other day and my virus control went nuts....just sayin'

Thank you both, I was jumping to conclusions. I have also deleted truly unkind comments from time to time.

Blogging takes a lot of time and I do enjoy the interaction. However, I'm cutting back from now through the end of summer....

Maybe:
~they don't care what anyone else has to say or they don't have the time or desire to keep up with the comments and answer back.
There's a lot of times I just read a blog post and don't comment, so I can sorta see the flip side of it.

well, I think I travel in much quieter circles, maybe not such a good thing! I can't imagine closing down comments; I'm always looking for them; maybe I'll change my mind if I have experiences like you guys are talking about; I think I'm feeling "safe" in blog land... but maybe shouldn't be!! meanwhile, I do enjoy your blog posts, Sherry, and often comment!

I haven't seen that, but I'm bad and don't often comment on what I read, so might not have noticed if something was closed.

Rather like talking at someone and then walking away before they can answer I think ...

hmmm... I hadn't notice that but maybe depending on the topic, the writer knew she might receive some pretty harsh comments? just a thought...

I have come across blogs with closed comments as well. What's funny, well and time consuming for me, is that I look and look for a comment link and am amazed when I don't see it. I'm assuming people are tired of being spammed or called out. But, I think it goes with the territory...and why blog if you don't want to hear others opinions?
