Lather, Rinse, Repeat

In a shorter version, I have posted part of this entry before. The piece in it's entirety was to have been published elsewhere. However, that does not appear likely. Hmmm.
.
In any event, I wanted to post it all for two reasons. First, because I think it explains a little bit about who I am and why I write. Second, because I make things for a living, I don't make a living telling you how to make a better business. I write anecdotally.
.
I once worked in an office on the 13th floor in a building where the windows didn't open to let in air, light or creativity. I stayed too long. Until one day I knew that if I didn't take a leap of faith and manage my own destiny I would suffocate. Was I afraid? What do you think?
.
Here's what I did: I've always had an unconventional approach to life. I have that same approach to jewelry design. I love the juxtaposition of everyday objects with sterling silver, so they become wearable art. I love the Japanese concept of wabi sabi, the beauty of imperfection.
.
I knew in a moment I could make this work, run a business and become self sufficient. With many long days into nights and a steep learning curve, I took a fledgling business in my attic studio to a placement of my jewelry in People magazine.
.
So, here are the 9 things I've learned in no particular order to guide me on my journey. Why no #10? Because someone always has a better #10, and I want to save room for that.
.
1. Sometimes when you are really busy, you will not be organized. You will do what is required to get through the day, keep your customers happy, and that will be enough.
.
2. No is an answer AND a complete sentence.
.
3. People tell you who they are. Don't try to read more into something that is not there. Usually, there is no hidden meaning.
.
4. Listen to your heart and trust your gut. What comes to mind first is most often the truth (see #3.)
.
5. Don't save intimacy for the weekends. Seriously, don't. Many smart people pay little heed to this. They do not mention living a rich and full and balanced life. It recharges you. It reminds you what you are doing this all for.
.
6. 1% of your customers will bring you angst. Do what you can to fix it, or you will spend 99% of your energy on that 1%. Do you have that kind of time?
.
7. Do good work. Do it with honor and dignity.
.
8. Have grace, It will save you when you screw up, and you will. It will also keep you humble.
.
9. Give back. Your choice. I choose KIVA. There is no better way for me to give back than to support emerging businesses around the world.
.
I'm honored you stayed with me for such a long post, now go kiss the ones you love,
xoSherry

I love Kiva, too. Whenever I have too much money lying around, that's where it goes. :)

I love the honesty in this post. And the reality. I spent time on corporate America too, but my office didn't even have windows.

Love #1 and #2 especially!

Here is my motto for today, inspired by someone else's words ... work from love and compassion, find the stillness in your heart, so that no matter what seems to be going on around you, in your heart you'll know that you can do anything.
