fireflies mate

It's not quite summer yet, so last night my husband and I were sitting by the fire pit after our son went to sleep. The night was filled with fireflies, but most of them were on the ground. I asked my husband if he knew why. That's how they attract a mate, he said.

So, I looked it up. True of course. Fireflies are bioluminescent. When they are at rest, and light up, they are signaling for a mate. Their cells contain luciferin, which mixes with oxygen to make them shine brightly. Hope our fireflies found love last night. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I find that very romantic. I wish I lived in a place with fireflies! I've only seen them once and they were lovely!
